White Dog Cave Basketmaker Atlatl Replica

Price: $75.00
A new atlatl from Occoquan Paleotechnics LLC.   This piece was made for a local experimental Archaeology demo, to showcase the spear/dart throwing systems of the desert Southwest in North America, and is fully FUNCTIONAL.
This atlatl dart thrower is an example of the most classic American model, the southwest Basketmaker.  The objects from White Dog Cave shown here date to around 2,000 years ago.  Throughout the history of the American southwest, this atlatl is shown in the rock art and in the archaeological record.  Many examples are found intact in dry caves, and it is considered to be a model unique to the Americas.  This model is based on the measurements of the archaeological example found in White Dog Cave, AZ(around 24 inches), in the correct materials of Oak and smoked Braintan buckskin.
This example has a very unique system of weights attached.  3 weights are lashed on from the middle towards the handle, in descending amounts of mass.   It is believed this is a way of "tuning" where lower amounts of weight were added in decreasing amounts until the proper amount is achieved.  The spur on this model is considered to be the easiest to "load" by most modern atlatl sportsmen, and many are using this style in competition today.  It is easy to hold using both the traditional "split finger" grip and the "hammer grip" with the soft buckskin finger loops.  The loops allow both left and right handed throwers.
