This lamp is a functional replica of the original, which was excavated at the very end of the cave of Lascaux, France. It is made in the same red sandstone of the original, and made to the same measurements(approximately 9 inches long). By filling the reservoir with oil, a small plant fiber wick can continue to hold a "candlelight" flame as long as the fuel source is replentished. In Paleolithic times, chunks of animal fat were carried and added to the lamp, providing continued light that did not go out like a torch.
