Faon aux l'oiseaux Propulseur Replica

Price: $45.00
The famous Faoan aux l'oiseaux(fawn/bird) spear thrower was found in the cave of Mas d'Azil in the Pyrenees region of France.  The occupations of the cave date to the Magdalenian period(12 to 17,000 years ago).  It is considered to be one of the most finely carved paleolithic art pieces known, as well as being one of the finest spear throwers known from the period.  The original measured 29.5 cms, and was carved in reindeer antler.  Our replica was made to the same dimensions and cast in modern epoxy for more strength than the plaster casts of previous generations.  It is believed that the drilled holes at the base of the handle were for attaching some kind of better grip, as experiments show that these work well for atlatl/spear throwers(called propulseurs) but are very uncomfortable to hold without some kind of grip attachment.  There are two well known fawn propulseur carvings from different sites, indicating that it might have been a motif known to more than the one artist at one site.
