Eden Point Cast

This cast was comissioned by the Smithsonian in 2011.  The original is an authentic Eden spearpoint from Wyoming, dating around 7 to 9,000 years ago.  Eden points are part of the Cody Archaeology complex of the Paleoindian Period in North America.  These stone tools are found throughout a wide range in the Great Plains, especially through Texas and Wyoming.  The material used here is Texas chert, and the point measures 5 and 1/4 inches long.  An excellent example of the type, this point shows some of the best pressure flaking known in the world.  The archaeology of the Cody complex shows that to make this point, the knapper must take the biface through a strict series of stages, in order to have the almost "machine like" look of the ripple flaked end result.
