Cast of the Chiriqui Owl Mace

Price: $28.00
A cast of the Owl Mace from ancient Costa Rica. It was made from the volcanic rock that is prevalant in the Costa Rica landscape, and it measures 2.5 inches across at the widest.   The central hole was drilled, so that the top was wider diameter(1 1/8th inches), and this prevented the stone weight from sliding off the haft.  The two eyes were created by using the same drilling device, and stopping at the desired depth.  It is unknown if the stone was painted or had inserts in the eye sockets of shell or precious stone.   No residue was found during microscopic evaluation at Occpaleo.  It was part of the weaponry of the Chiriqui culture between 500 to 1500 AD.   The original was sent to Occpaleo on a gracious loan from the outstanding Sherman private collection.   Handling hafting available upon request.  (Cast copyright Occpaleo 2015)
